The 5-inch tablet gets closer to an US launch

The market of tablet PCs has seen a nice boost ever since Apple came to shelves with its first solution in the area, the iPad, and Dell's Streak slate is one of the most notable names, that's for sure. The tablet was released into the wild only recently, even if Dell announced it ever since the beginning of the ongoing year, and should soon be put on sale in the United States too, though it seems that users would be able to enjoy its capabilities only on AT&T's network.

According to the leading computer vendor, it does not plan to offer support for T-Mobile's 3G network with the Dell Streak, which means that only one GSM carrier would offer connectivity for the device. In case there are users interested in the 5-inch slate, they should also know that the company plans on making the device available Carbon Black in the beginning and that it also intends to upgrade it to the newest flavor of Google's Android operating system, Android 2.2 Froyo.

Here's what Dell's Lionel Menchaca had to say in a recent post: - At this point, we do not have plans for supporting T-Mobile's 3G network; Dell Streak will not be certified for T-Mobile operation overall. - Like I mentioned in my previous Dell Streak post, the Android 2.2 over the air update (Froyo) will come later this year. We will ship Dell Streak with Android 1.6. - Carbon Black is the color that will be available at the US launch. New Cherry Red will be the next color that we'll offer. I don't have an ETA for New Cherry Red at this time, but it will be coming soon.

The Dell Streak definitely seems to be one of the nicest Android-based devices out there. Of course, some of the latest smartphones running under the OS do sport large touchscreen displays, getting closer to what the tablet has to offer, but, at the end of the day, it remains unique. A few more details on what it has to offer can be extracted from the video below, where the device is presented by Kevin Andrew from the Dell Streak development team. Dell kicked off pre-sales of the tablet not too long ago, and users interested in a purchase should head over to the company's website here.
