A year ago Dell introduced the first XPS 13 Developer Edition laptop dubbed Sputnik. Then, after just a few months the company rolled out a successor.

What made the device special was that it ran Ubuntu instead of Windows and as it turns out the laptop was quite popular. So now, encouraged by the positive feedback, Dell announced the availability of the Sputnik 3 laptop.

Dell has introduced the latest standard in chip architecture (Intel Haswell) in the new Ubuntu powered machine, so users should expect to see a sensible rise in battery life.

The laptop will come sporting a 13.3-inch Full HD display and will draw power from an advanced Core i7 4500U processor. Dell has slipped in Intel HD Graphics 4400 (or HD Graphics 5000 for the enterprise model.) There’s also the 256GB SSD and the latest 802.11ac Wi-Fi and Bluetooth 4.0. The device runs Ubuntu 12.04 LTS.

The system’s price starts at $1,549 / €1,148 and is already available for order in the US. Canada will see the Sputnik 3 as soon as next week. North American customers are given the choice of opting for an i5/128GB version for a price tag of $1,249 / €925.

By the end of November Sputnik 3 will arrive in the UK, Germany, France, Spain, Austria and the Netherlands.
