Dell introduces a new generation of servers, based on power saving.
Dell PowerEdge servers are said to be 25% less consuming than the previous ones. Also, Dell announced thermally optimized OptiPlex series. Furthermore, the company states that combined with Intel Core 2 Duo processors, The OptiPlex 745 desktops are dramatically cutting consumption with 70% compared with older generations. This is calculated based on the 2006 US average unit cost of energy ($0.10/ KWh) and assuming estimated annual energy consumed with a usage profile of 1 hour maximum performance, 7 hours office productivity, 1 hour idle and 15 hours sleep for 264 days a year, and with all other days in sleep state.
"Dell continues to simplify operations and deliver greater efficiencies for customers so they can focus on growth and reducing IT complexities. The new OptiPlex lineup exemplifies Dell's leadership in delivering customer-driver, standards-based life-cycle solutions for businesses", said Jeff Clarke, senior vice president, Dell Product Group.
According to Dell statements, with the new Energy Smart configuration, OptiPlex default power settings exceed the mutually recognized Energy Star standard. Further additions are introduced, like the innovative BTX chassis (designed specifically for thermal effectiveness, maximizes the internal HyperCool fan performance) and Power Factor Correcting (power supply and motherboard require less energy to maintain ideal cooler internal operating temperatures).
Combined with performance gains, the result means a 3X increase in "performance per watt" over previous generations. "As an Energy Star partner, Dell has significantly advanced the area of computer energy efficiency and heightened awareness of the importance of Energy Star. By participating in Energy Star, Dell is showing businesses worldwide that protecting the environment is also good for the bottom line", said Kathleen Hogan, Director, USEPA Climate Protection Partnerships Division.
A good thing is that with less power, the fires won't be so dangerous anymore.
A Dell Energy Smart-enabled OptiPlex 745 with a Core 2 Duo E6300 processor starts at $899 with standard three-year limited warranty and next-business day on-site service. Configurations with Dell 17-inch flat panels are priced at $1,098.
