Dell Offers the First Overclockable Laptop

Dell just launched the first laptop that integrates a Blu-Ray burner. In case you're wondering what has that to do with overclocking, then you should read this. INTEL has quietly begun shipping a clock-unlocked version of its Core 2 Duo T7600 mobile CPU at almost the same time with the XPS launch, but no one can actually find the CPU in stores. No one excepting Dell.

And as a proof, Dell quietly revealed the existence of the Core 2 Duo T7600G earlier this week when they launched XPS M1710. Among the processor options offered to buyers was a 2.33GHz T7600G CPU, priced $275 higher than the ordinary T7600 which is also clocked at 2.33GHz. Both CPUs have 4MB of unified L2 cache and run on a 667MHz FSB. As you can see, the numbers are pretty standard.

Dell doesn't say anything about the CPU, probably because INTEL didn't comment on the story either. After some quick search you can find several pages that mentioned that the T7600G gives "extraordinary system control to tune and enhance performance". Nice indeed. I wonder if the CPU can actually be overclocked when mounted on the XPS laptop. Cause if that's true, the new XPS could be something to drool over.

T7600G is rumored to be a "non-roadmap" part that has FSB and core clocks unlocked and is ready for overclocking attempts. I somehow think that Dell knew that and this is the main reason behind its higher price. Nevertheless, Dell doesn't say anything that could relate to overclocking, motive for which we'll have to wait for the XPS to come out before we can be sure.
