Dell announced a new rather radical plan of reducing its environmental footprint by the way of a new partnership with its customers in order to build a global scale community dedicated to the improvement of the environment. This program makes Dell the first major computer systems manufacturer and vendor to launch such an extensive carbon neutralizing strategy.

This new environmental strategy is aimed at neutralizing the carbon emissions related to Dell's global operations and it comes as an extension and continuation of the previous environmentally friendly actions. According to the news site laptoplogic, the company's president and chief executive officer, Michael Dell, talked about a program that would bring ''a long-term, carbon-neutral commitment to our shared Earth'', while at the same time, the company also announced the launch of the ''Plant a Forest for Me'' action.

This new initiative comes as a continuation of the older ''Plant a Tree for Me'' program for consumers and it is aimed at facilitating the planting of a large number of trees in areas that are marked for reforestation projects. Among the founding members of this program, there are a number of companies like Dell, ABN AMRO, AMD, Ask.com, Salesforce.com and WellPoint and each of them announced that it will purchase a number of trees for the continuation of this project.

The carbon neutrality starts will reducing and later eliminating the greenhouse gas emissions and Dell already announced a program that is aimed at reducing the company's energy footprint by installing solutions that will automatically shut down computer systems during periods of inactivity and thus saving around $1.8 million annually, while reducing the CO2 emissions by 8,500 tons.

Other energy-friendly program was implemented at its Central Texas operations facilities where they company replaced the office lighting systems with a lower-consuming alternative that should reduce the energy consumption by nine percent. Other plans to reduce the energy consumption include the replacement of the old CRT computer displays with LCD-based screens while at the same time extending this program to customers too, by introducing computer systems that are more energy efficient.
