The company is offering buyout packages until December 20

I've seen my share of employee layoffs over the years, ranging from dozens to the thousands, but Dell is being a bit more gentle about it compared to most everyone else.

Instead of just firing people, it's offering buyout packages to those willing to voluntarily separate from the company.

Basically, Dell is asking its workers to quit. It's is giving them until December 20 to decide in fact. In other words, the company is offering to pay them for terminating their contracts early. A severance package, as it were.

Only the employees themselves know exactly what the buyout package consists of. For now at any rate.

Dell may or may not proceed with an actual layoff phase if the number of people who accept being paid to quit (and doesn't that sound strange) doesn't reach its expectations, whatever they may be.
