Dell and Cingular Wireless announced they will work together to bring Cingular's third generation (3G) wireless broadband technology to Dell notebook customers. With its build-to-order capability, Dell aims to expand customers' wireless broadband options and deliver access to Cingular's high-speed wireless data network.

Beginning in the first quarter of next year, Dell will offer notebook computers with integrated High-Speed Downlink Packet Access (HSPDA) wireless broadband capability, offering customer
choice in network providers.

Dell offers Cingular's GC83 EDGE PC card modem for its notebook customers. Customers can purchase the card for $199 from Dell, and then apply for a $150 mail-in rebate from Cingular, available with select plans. Service pricing includes a $59.99 per month unlimited data offer from Cingular for customers who also have a voice plan.

Dell is responding to customer demand for choice and is the first major personal computer supplier to announce multiple wireless carrier partnerships focusing on integrated mobile broadband capability.

Cingular's 3G network infrastructure is based on Universal Mobile Telecommunications System (UMTS) technology, a global standard for 3G wireless networks to which carriers in more than 35 countries have committed, and will include HSDPA. HSDPA will offer typical speeds of 400 to 700 kilobits per second (kpbs).

The first wireless carrier to deploy HSDPA, Cingular expects to offer UMTS/HSDPA services in 15 to 20 markets by the end of this year. By the end of 2006, Cingular expects HSPDA network coverage into most major U.S. markets.
