How long before a Dell Chrome OS netbook appears is still unclear

Anyone even remotely interested in netbooks will likely have, at the very least, heard of Chrome OS. This cloud-based operating system is one of Google's most looked forward to projects and promises to change the netbook experience sometime during the second half of the ongoing year. Acer will most likely be a launch partner, considering that it revealed its support for Chrome OS as early as last year. If a recent report is to be believed, however, the Taiwanese PC maker may just have its work cut out for it.

Apparently, Dell is just as determined to grab a slice of the Chrome OS phenomenon as its rival is. No words were spoken concerning actual products, but Amit Midha, executive of Dell Asia, stated in an interview with Reuters that collaboration with Google is already underway.

The Texas-based computer supplier also intends to become a prominent figure on the market for electronics running the Android operating system, such as smartphones and, of course, tablets the likes of the Streak.

"We have to have a point of view on the industry and technology direction two years, three years down the road, so we continuously work with Google on this," Amit Midha, Dell's president for Greater China and South Asia explained to Reuters in the aforementioned interview.

"There are going to be unique innovations coming up in the marketplace in two, three years, with a new form of computing, we want to be on that forefront ... So with Chrome or Android or anything like that we want to be one of the leaders," Midha added, noting that talks with Google were in progress even though nothing specific could be said.

Google will supposedly make the formal introduction of its cloud-based OS in “late fall,” at which time there should be at least a few netbooks ready for exhibition.
