Dell has finally managed to give us a glimpse at its new line of E notebooks, and we have been expecting to hear something from the manufacturer as its competitors ASUS, MSI and
Acer have already flooded the market with their machines. Dell's E notebooks are said to be launched next month, but a look at their specifications is good enough at the moment.
Dell will launch its E series in three flavors it seems, the E Classic, E Video and E Video+. Besides the particular characteristics of each model, Dell's E notebooks will feature a 1.6GHz Atom N270 processor, an 8.9 inch display with 1,024x600 resolution, 802.11b/g WiFi, Ethernet, an SD Card reader, three USB ports and a D-sub connector. As OS, the notebooks will feature either Linux or Windows XP.
The notebooks have different memory and storage characteristics. While E Classic will have 512MB memory and a 4GB SSD, the E Video model will get 1 GB of memory and an 8GB SSD. This model will also come with Bluetooth and a 0.3Megapixel WebCam. The 12GB SSD marks the only difference between E Video + and E Video.
eeextra, which published the specs for the series, says it also has those for the E Slim. It seems that Dell has in store for us a notebook that will feature either a 1.3GHz or a 1.6GHz Atom based processor (Silverthorne). The Silverthorne core, developed for MID devices actually, has a lower power consumption (2.5W) than the Diamondville processor (4W), and is said to be almost as thick as the MacBook Air, a mere 211mm.
E Slim offers a display resolution of1, 366x768 and 1GB or 2GB of memory. For storage, it will include either a 40GB or a 60GB 1.8 inch hard drive. Other specifications are similar to those featured by the rest of the E series.
August 2008 is set as the launch time frame for Dell's E series. The rumored price for the E Classic model is $299, which is quite cheap considering other similar machines. Although no prices for the Video and Video + have been unveiled, we expect them to be close to the Classic. Also, Dell announced a revision of the Series in October, when it plans to enhance the blacktop and to integrate WiMAX.
