“Sinister” is considered one of the most solid horror releases of the past couple of years so that alone should recommend “Deliver Us from Evil,” which also comes from writer-director Scott Derrickson. The second one would be the brand new international trailer that just dropped.

As usual, it’s embedded below, at the end of this blog post.

The film, as you probably guessed, deals with satanic forces. As an unconventional priest (Edgar Ramirez) explains to an overzealous police officer (Eric Bana), there are two kinds of evil in this world: secondary evil, which is perpetrated by man, and primary evil, which is pure and, because of it, the most dangerous.

The two team up to battle the latter, but only after the cop realizes that he has an ability that allows him to see things other people can’t see, which puts his family in danger. Olivia Munn plays his wife and Joel McHale also has a supporting role.

It’s been said countless times: it’s difficult to make horror movies these days that don’t favor style over substance. “Sinister,” released in 2012, was tense and unexpected, terrifying without resorting to cheap tricks, and disturbing precisely because it was so unexpected.

If “Deliver Us from Evil” is even half as good as that one, it would still be worth the while. It will be out in theaters on July 2, so we’ll see then.
