When “The Avengers” arrived in theaters this May, it impressed fans and critics alike for its ability to maintain an optimistic outlook even though it dealt with serious, very violent conflicts. It was never so, a deleted, alternate opening scene reveals.

Check it out below.

The scene opens with a scene of mayhem, presumably caused by The Avengers’ clash with the alien forces.

SHIELD Agent Maria Hill (Cobie Smulders) comes into view and makes no secret of who she holds responsible for the tragedy: this was no time for superheroes, especially not the kind that Nick Fury brought together, hoping against all hope they’d put their differences aside for the good of mankind.

“Who would bring those people together and not expect what happened,” Hill says.

The scene is beautiful in a most painful way but, you will agree, it doesn’t go at all with the film director Joss Whedon eventually delivered.

Still, look for it on the DVD / Blu-ray release.
