Defense Grid 2 has just gotten a nice proper preview trailer at PAX East, showing that the team still has what it takes to build a proper maze where countless aliens can find their deaths.

Developer Hidden Path struggled a bit with the Kickstarter campaign before a mysterious investor made the sequel to the acclaimed tower defense game possible, and now the development process is on track, as illustrated by the numerous updates on the game's blog.

The last trailer, released last August, showed an early alpha build that you're better off not seeing, but this time around the team managed to deliver a much better video, showing the high-quality visuals that the original Defense Grid became famous for.

In an era where tower defense games were a dime a dozen, Defense Grid earned popularity for more than its adequate name. It managed to present an interesting balance that gradually increased the complexity of gameplay and challenged players to adapt, merely building the same maze over and over again not being enough to secure victory.

The new video essentially shows the old Defense Grid on a brand-new engine, which is not a bad thing by a longshot, but everyone is most likely waiting to catch a glimpse of the anticipated cooperative and competitive multiplayer modes.

Hidden Path has partnered with 505 Games in order to deliver the game to Steam and consoles, and Defense Grid 2 is scheduled to come out before the end of 2014 on PC, Mac, Linux, and the Xbox One and PlayStation 4 next-gen consoles.
