The music streaming app is going from strength to strength

Deezer, the music streaming service, has been expanding fast by focusing on everyone except the US. This has allowed the service to acquire the music licensing rights it needs cheaper and faster.

It seems that the strategy has paid off. The company announced that it now has 5 million paying customers and 12 million monthly active users in general.

"Doubling the number of paid subscribers in 12 months sends a hugely encouraging signal that music streaming's time is now," Axel Dauchez, Deezer’s CEO, says.

"One year ago we pledged to launch Deezer worldwide because we felt music deserved to be truly global. One year on, we are proud to say that we have over-delivered on our promises, with more than 5 million subscribers across more than 180 countries and a team of expert editors around the world sharing their love and passion for music," he adds.

Not only has it added more users, but it's also expanding its library. The service now offers 30 million tracks, one of the largest libraries of any music streaming service out there.

Granted, not all the songs are available everywhere and, like with other streaming services, the selection even varies with time, i.e. some songs may be available now but not three months from now.

To help it continue to grow, Deezer has announced the availability of a Mac app to allow users to listen to their songs without a browser open. The app also syncs with the local iTunes library and works offline, like the mobile apps. There are already Deezer apps for iOS, Android, Windows 8, and Windows Phone 8.

The service also introduced two new discovery features, namely Hear This and Explore. The first is a music feed feature that combines automatic recommendations with songs from your friends, new tunes from artists you like, and so on. Meanwhile, Explore allows you to dig in and discover new music based on what Deezer editors pick for various genres.
