The shiny, luxurious fur on that cave wombat would make any dog competition entrants green with envy

Capcom has released a series of tech demo videos from the upcoming PS4 exclusive Deep Down, showing some mad fur action and coats more luxurious than you would expect to see in a dog food ad.

Hair has traditionally been a pretty big problem, as modeling individual strands is painstakingly difficult and taxing, but recent leaps in modeling technology and middleware, together with the extra oomph that current-gen hardware platforms are able to deliver, will see greatly enhanced visuals all across the board, including luxurious fur on cave badgers, such as the ones shown in Capcom's latest videos.

The trailers don't offer much in terms of gameplay, but they do manage to impress on a visual level, with fluid and very natural animations, showing an unprecedented level of detail that will make the upcoming dungeon crawler a joy to play.

If there ever was a time for mole-rats to shine, it's in Deep Down's latest tech demos. The game will have players step into an ancient mystical world, fighting the demons and monsters of the past in an ongoing quest for powerful relics.

The demos showcase the improvements made when it comes to rendering fur, skin and water, showing a water elemental centaur-like beast that shimmers quite nicely.

Back to the future

Oddly enough, Capcom has revealed that the action is actually set in the future, with players being New York City residents that undertake perilous missions to recover strange relics and uncover the secrets of a distant past, by touching magical artifacts that teleport them and allow them to delve in deadly dungeons to battle monsters and collect treasures.

Although the game is single-player focused, players will also have the option to enjoy a type of loose multiplayer connection similar to the one featured in From Software's Dark Souls titles. Gamers will be able to band together and brave the mysteries and monsters of the past, including via split-screen multiplayer.

The developer has revealed that gamers will be able to employ a wide assortment of weaponry, each of them prompting a shift in the way players tackle the game's challenges.

The artifacts that players will collect correspond to an emotion, such as anger, hate, rage, lust or envy, and there will be thematic boss battles waiting for players, including rock titans and fire-breathing dragons.

Deep Down is slated for a 2015 release, at a yet undisclosed date, headed exclusively to Sony's latest home entertainment system, the PlayStation 4.
