The Elive development team is hard at work releasing Beta versions for the next major version of their Elive distribution, a Debian-based computer operating system built around the awesome and modern Enlightenment desktop environment.

Elive 5.2.8 Beta is now available for download and testing via Softpedia, a version that includes a number of improvements over the previous Beta release of the distribution. According to the official release notes, Elive 5.2.8 Beta includes a faster, smaller, and more optimized Linux kernel package.

Elive’s kernel has been injected with a great number of patches in order to improve the overall stability of the operating system and bring support for newer hardware components. In addition, the automatic detection and configuration of hardware has been greatly improved since Elive 5.2.4 Beta.

EeePC hardware scaling and hotkeys are now recognized, and unnecessary drivers will now be removed after installation, which requires users to make a donation. Elive 5.2.8 Beta also adds several boot options that allow users to boot the operating system on special hardware where previous Beta releases were unable to start.

Touchpad support sees a great number of improvements

Touchpad support has also been improved in Elive 5.2.8 Beta, and it now includes automatic detections of special configurations, such as corners for extra mouse buttons, extra mouse buttons in tapping, scrolling, tab to click, as well as support for dragging items by double tapping or moving. The bottom zone has also been disabled for clickpads.

Last but not least, kernel modules will now be recompiled when upgrading them, even if the automatic DKMS (Dynamic Kernel Module Support) function fails. As usual, keep in that you’re dealing with an unstable operating system that might not work properly. Please report bugs on the distribution's official website.
