With a two-day delay from the official release schedule, the Debian Project has had the great pleasure of announcing today, June 8, the immediate availability for download of the first maintenance version of Debian GNU/Linux 8 (Jessie).

Debian 8.1 is finally here and promises to bring all sorts of bug fixes for many of the annoying issues that were present in the Debian GNU/Linux 8.0 operating system and reported by users or discovered by the Debian developers and contributors since the initial release of Jessie, back in April 2015.

Looking at the changelog, we can notice miscellaneous fixes and improvements for packages like Caja, BlackBox, ClamAv, cwm, Debian Installer, DBus, didjvu, ejabberd, feed2imap, fai, FreeOrion, gdnsd, ganeti, GNOME Shell, GnuTLS, libav, MATE, mew, Mutter, node-groove, open-iscsi, OpenCV, pdf2DjVu, Perl, PHP, and systemd.

As expected, Debian GNU/Linux 8.1 comes with a new Linux kernel, version 3.16.7-ctk11, which fixes the well-known EXT4 data corruption issue caused by delayed and unwritten extents, blacklists queued TRIM on Samsung 850 Pro SSDs, adds support for XHCI on APM Mustang USB, and updates Crucial/Micron blacklist in libata.

"The Debian project is pleased to announce the first update of its stable distribution Debian 8 (codename 'Jessie'). This update mainly adds corrections for security problems to the stable release, along with a few adjustments for serious problems. Security advisories were already published separately and are referenced where available," reads the announcement.

Do not throw away your old Debian 8 CDs

Debian Project informs users that they should not throw away their old Debian 8.0 installation medias because Debian 8.1 is not a new operating system, but a collection of software updates and patches designed to keep the Jessie release stable and reliable for a longer period.

However, those of you who want to install Debian GNU/Linux 8.1 on new machines can download the official installation DVDs right now via Softpedia or download the Debian Live 8.1 CDs, which include the KDE, GNOME, MATE, Xfce, LXDE, and Cinnamon editions.
