The operating system uses the GNU Hurd kernel

On April 30, Samuel Thibault had the enormous pleasure of announcing the immediate availability for download of Debian GNU/Hurd 2015, an open source operating system based on Debian GNU/Linux and GNU Hurd, a set of servers running on top of the GNU Mach microkernel.

Prominent features of Debian GNU/Hurd 2015 include updated core GNU Mach and GNU Hurd packages to versions 1.5 and 0.6, respectively, improved performance under load and prolonged uptime, and migration of the networking drivers to user-space drivers using a Linux-2.6.32 codebase and the NetDDE framework.

"This is a snapshot of Debian 'sid' at the time of the stable Debian 'Jessie' release (April 2015), so it is mostly based on the same sources," says Samuel Thibault. "It is not an official Debian release, but it is an official Debian GNU/Hurd port release."

Some of the pre-installed apps have been updated as well

In addition to the new features mentioned above, the Debian GNU/Hurd 2015 operating system updates some of the pre-installed open-source software packages, including the Xfce 4.10 desktop environment, Iceweasel 31 ESR web browser, Emacs 24.4 text and code editor, as well as the X.Org 7.7 display server.

Debian GNU/Hurd 2015 is currently available only for the i386 (32-bit) hardware architectures. According to the release notes, it is a snapshot of Debian Sid at the same time as the Debian GNU/Linux 8.0 (Jessie) release. Please note that the operating system does not use the Linux kernel, but the GNU/Hurd kernel.

Download Debian GNUHurd 2015 right now from Softpedia, where you will find three DVD ISO images, as well as a NetInstall ISO image. If you want to download Debian GNU/Hurd as a set of nine CDs, you can get them from the operating system's website.
