The Elive Team had the pleasure of announcing today, April 7, the immediate availability for download and testing of a new Beta version for their Elive Linux distribution, a Debian-based computer operating system built around the Enlightenment desktop environment.

The biggest feature in the Elive 2.6.2 Beta release is the inclusion of the Nvidia and AMD/ATI (FGRLX) proprietary video drivers, something that Elive users have asked for a long time now.

"This version includes the very waited integration of the privative drivers," said the Elive developers in today's announcement. "When you boot Elive you will find now a dialog that asks you if you want to install the privative drivers in the case that is detected on your computer."

The Elive Installer received numerous improvements

In addition to the Nvidia and AMD video drivers, Elive 2.6.2 Beta comes with a greatly improved installer that will now let users more easily and quickly install the operating system on their computers. The entire code for the installer has been optimized, resulting in a cleaner installation.

Moreover, the audio detection system has been improved in this new Beta version of Elive Linux, supporting even more sound cards out of the box. The readability of colors in the terminals has been improved as well, along with the ability to view system logs in the TTY12.

Last but not least, the ccache tool has been included and enabled by default in Elive 2.6.2 Beta, in order to provide blazing fast compilation experiences for developers. The default configurations of Vim have been improved and updated as well.

Download Elive 2.6.2 Beta right now from Softpedia. Keep in mind, though, that this is an unstable operating system, and it's not recommended for deployment on production machines. Also, please note that you will have to donate some money to the Elive developers in order to install the operating system on your computer.
