The Debian Project had the pleasure of announcing the general availability of the Debian GNU/Linux 8.0.0 (codename Jessie) computer operating system on April 25, 2015, which will be an LTS (Long Term Support) version supported with security patches and software updates until year 2020.

Dubbed Jessie, the Debian 8 Linux kernel-based operating system brings a significant amount of features, and it is based on some of the greatest Linux technologies in the world. And now, thanks to the Debian LTS and Debian Security teams, users will get unconditional support for the next five years.

"After almost 24 months of constant development the Debian project is proud to present its new stable version 8 (code name "Jessie"), which will be supported for the next 5 years thanks to the combined work of the Debian Security team and of the Debian Long Term Support team," was stated in the official announcement.

The many features of the Debian GNU/Linux 8.0 (Jessie) OS

Among the numerous features of Debian GNU/Linux 8.0 (Jessie), we can mention the implementation of the next-generation systemd init system, which provides faster boot times, better support for UEFI machines, as well as support for the ARM64 and PowerPC64EL hardware architectures.

Additionally, we can also mention that the famous GNU/Linux distribution is powered by Linux 3.16.7-ckt9 kernel, offers more than 43,000 software packages, and includes many updated applications and core components, such as GNOME 3.14 and KDE Plasma Workspaces / KDE Applications 4.11.13 desktop environments, LibreOffice 4.3.x, GCC (GNU Compiler Collection) 4.9.2, Icedove 31.6.0, and Iceweasel 31.6.

It is also worth mentioning that the Debian GNU/Linux 8 operating system is distributed as two new Live CD flavors, with the Cinnamon and MATE desktop environments, for which we provide screenshot tours on our dedicated Linux Homepage. Download Debian GNU/Linux 8.0 right now from Softpedia.
