Following on the success of the Squeeze LTS project, the Debian LTS team had the pleasure of announcing that they are preparing to support the Debian 7 (Wheezy) operating system with security patches for a longer period.

Eventually, Debian 8 (Jessie), which will be released tomorrow, April 25, might also become an LTS (Long Term Support) version in the next couple of years. However, the Debian LTS team urges developers worldwide to join the project and help them offer better hardware coverage, because Debian 6 "Squeeze" was only supported on x86 PCs (i386 and amd64).

"Debian 6 "Squeeze" has seen more than 200 security uploads [...] and many organizations can thus safely rely on the continued maintenance of Squeeze LTS," was stated in today's announcement. "Given this experience, we are confident that Debian 7 "Wheezy" and Debian 8 "Jessie" will benefit from Long Term Support."

The Debian LTS team and the Debian Security team will gather together at the DebConf 15 event that will take place in Heidelberg, Germany, between August 15-22, 2015. There, they will plan to make Debian 7 (Wheezy) an LTS version. If you want to join the team, attending the DebConf 15 converence is a perfect move.
