Dead Space was one of the most hyped up games of the end of 2008. Even though it was a brand new franchise, which led to the fact it lost in sales to holiday blockbusters like Gears of War 2, Fallout 3 or Resistance 2, it managed to generate a lot of fan response due to its pretty elaborate use of horror mechanics and the dismemberment feature, which meant that you needed to leave your enemies without their limbs in order to kill them.

After the success of the first game, launched on the PC, the Xbox 360 and the PlayStation 3, the team at Visceral Games, former EA Redwood Shores, is now hard at work developing Dead Space: Extraction, a prequel specifically designed for the Nintendo Wii. The game has received a release date, with Wii gamers set to be frightened by this futuristic space shooter on September 29.

It is basically an on-rails shooter, even though EA representatives don't really like that tag. Marked to tell the story of a few survivors that managed to escape the colony and board the Ishimura space ship, it will certainly be interesting in terms of plot. The horror aspect will definitely be there, giving players a terrifying experience.

“Our team is really excited to bring the intensity of the Dead Space universe to an entire new audience,” said Executive Producer, Steve Papoutsis. “We are going to deliver the same high quality, cinematic experience we delivered in the original Dead Space, while also adding co-op, new enemies, weapons and taking advantage of all of the unique features the Wii has to offer.”

Overall, Dead Space: Extraction promises to do a lot of things, and from the screenshots revealed up until now, it looks quite good for a Wii game. Look forward to more details in the following days, as the game will be part of EA's lineup of playable titles at E3 this week.
