Visceral Games, the developer of the critically acclaimed Dead Space third person survival horror title and of its upcoming sequel, Dead Space 2, has revealed that it wants to see more such titles, in order to keep the genre going.

According to Dead Space 2's producer, Steven Papoutsis, more games like Dead Space would be a breath of fresh air, especially as how the genre was slowly becoming extinct until the original game appeared in late 2008.

"I think it would be awesome to see more games like Dead Space out there, there would be stuff for us to learn from and keep the genre going," he said. "I think there are a lot of people that enjoy it and it would be great to see that so I hope that happens."

Papoutsis admits though that the genre is slowly fading away, as customers aren't into such titles anymore, and more studios are focusing on what the market demands right now.

"I don't know, it's very difficult to make survival horror games, there's so much that has to go into each moment and planning out each thing, understanding that at any moment a player may not even see what you want them to see, there is a lot of work that goes into that."

"Also, I think some of it may even be demand in terms of what games you see that are the big blockbuster games that are selling gangbusters, that may be a motivator," he added.

The Visceral Games executive says that a lot of work and elements need to be incorporated in survival horror games, something which might not go so well with development studios.

"They're challenging, they're not easy games to make by any means. There are twitch action elements that need to be really good, then there's the atmosphere and tension building, story, character design, all those elements that go into it that aren't as formulaic as some other genres of games."

"For us, we're doing this game because we like horror, science-fiction, so it makes perfect sense for us but I don't know what other publishers thoughts are on that."

With a classic survival horror franchise like Resident Evil turning its head to a more action oriented gameplay, at least with RE5, and Silent Hill slowly fading away, it seems that Dead Space is the only large franchise still keeping its feet firmly planted in the genre.

Yes, I would love more survival horror. I love a wide variety of games but they all have one thing in common, they are driven by story, not action. Action is fine but it' nothing without story. For example I will take Red Dead Redemption over Call of Duty any day. Survival Horror is the greatest game genre there is and Silent Hill 2 is my favorite game of all time. I do not want to imagine a world without another survival horror game to look forward to. I want them deep, atmospheric, well written, original, and horrifying.
