While we already heard of Dead Space 3 last week, thanks to a couple of big leaks, Electronic Arts’ E3 2012 brought forth the first official look at the new horror shooter from Visceral Games, as the first details and two videos were made available.

Dead Space 1 kicked off a pretty interesting franchise for EA and its sequel, Dead Space 2, tried to move the story further while experimenting with a lackluster multiplayer mode.

With Dead Space 3, developer Visceral has dropped the competitive online mode and replaced it with a cooperative one, allowing the protagonist, Isaac Clarke, to team up with a new character called John Carver, who’s a sergeant for Earthgov.

In terms of story, Dead Space 3 sees Clarke crash land on the snowy planet of Tau Volantis, where a potential cure for the necromorph infestation might be found.

“After crash-landing on a hostile new planet known as Tau Volantis, hero Isaac Clarke discovers that this planet could be the key to ending the Necromorph infestation. In his violent hunt for answers, Isaac must battle subzero, icy conditions and deadly, highly-evolved enemies including all-new Necromorphs, gigantic boss creatures and even misguided zealot humans.”

While the game can be experienced alone, just like previous installments, playing with a buddy thanks to the drop-in drop-out co-op mode allows you to experience more story elements.

“Players can choose to team-up with a friend anytime in the game with the fully integrated drop-in/drop-out co-op feature. Players that choose to take down the terror together will experience additional story details and gameplay mechanics only found when playing as the co-op character, Earthgov Sergeant John Carver.”

Dead Space 3 is set to be launched in February, 2013, for platforms like the PC, PlayStation 3 or Xbox 360.

Until then, check out the first trailer for the game and a gameplay demonstration of the co-op mode in the two videos below.
