“The game will ship when it is ready”

When Dead Space honored out gaming rigs, be they PCs or consoles, players got a chance to experience something that very few titles could deliver, and the ones that do are far between in their releases. Dead Space gave them the chance to feel cold sweat pouring down their spines and killed them simply because their hands were too shaky to aim properly. While most of the monster-popping-out-of-the-closet moments weren't all that terrifying, and most of them were predictable, the true nightmare bearers were the atmosphere and the pauses between fights.

The wait, uncertainty and the spare time where our mind was free to think of the terrors that awaited in the dark corners of the Ishimura, and not blinded by the survival instincts of “Shoot him in the knee!” were what made Dead Space a hit. So, Dead Space 2 has quite a name to live up to, and, trying not to shame itself, Visceral Games decided that it was better to take its time with the game and fuss over every detail a hundred times, rather than release a survival horror that we could play at night without further founding our therapist's Porsche charity drive.

As such, while quite a few things have been already revealed by the studio concerning the game, one thing that has remained in the dark is the actual release date, and even a rough estimate. Dead Space 2's executive producer, Steve Papoutsis, stated in an interview with CVG that, “We are focused 100% on quality and making a great sequel to the original Dead Space. The company is completely behind our team and Visceral Games.”

“The game will ship when it is ready and meets with the teams and Visceral Games high quality standards.” As for the departure of Visceral Game's lead people, Glen Schofield and Michael Condrey, Papoutsis believes that this will in no way affect the game's quality. “It takes a lot more than 2 people to make a great game,” he added.

“The entire team did a tremendous job on the original. We are fortunate to have the majority of those folks back on the sequel. I think the work that is happening now is fantastic and surpasses what we did on the original. We are not being held back at all on Dead Space 2 and hopefully people will see that when they get to see more of the game.” As for the title's surprising, but also very hush-hush, multiplayer feature, one thing that Papoutsis did promise was that, “You will be able to strategically dismember your friends,” so that's some great news right there.
