Electronic Arts has unveiled Dead Space Ignition for the PlayStation Network and the Xbox Live Arcade. The title is a prequel to Isaac Clarke's adventures in Dead Space 2 meant to allow players to witness how the Necromoprh outbreak started on the Sprawl, the space station setting of Dead Space 2.

This is just the first game planned to expand upon the Dead Space franchise, according to EA. “Dead Space Ignition is the first of many exciting game extensions we have planned for the launch of Dead Space 2,” said Steve Papoutsis, the executive producer of the Dead Space franchise. “The interactive comic-style game will give Dead Space fans a unique perspective on the events leading up to Dead Space 2, but will also introduce the storyline to a brand-new audience of gamers.”

Dead Space Ignition is comprised of a comic book style choose your own adventure narrative and three hacking mini-games: Hardware Crack, Trace Route and System Override. The story has four unique endings, as players can actively influence the way the main character will survive the Necromorph threat. Furthermore, finishing the title will unlock an exclusive suit of armor that will be usable by Isaac Clarke in Dead Space 2.

This downloadable prequel is written by Antony Johnston, the author of such graphic novels as Wasteland and Daredevil. He has worked on the Dead Space franchise before, being the creator of the six-part comic book series released in 2008. Dead Space Ignition will launch sometime this fall, just in time to begin the promotion of Dead Space 2, which will arrive on the 25th of January 2011. No details about the pricing have been announced by Electronic Arts for the moment, unfortunately, but surely more will come later on.
