Even if Dead Rising 2 has barely been released, Capcom, its publisher is looking to the future, and confirms that work on Dead Rising 3 has already begun at Blue Castle Games, the studio responsible for the sequel.

According to Capcom's Chief Operating Officer, David Reeves, Dead Rising 3 will continue the story from the second game, and will receive digital content, in the form of prequels or sequels, just like Dead Rising 2.

This digital content will bridge the two games, and offer some sort of overall story for the whole franchise.

"Obviously, with all of that success on Dead Rising 2, it makes sense to move onto Dead Rising 3," said Reeves. "I think that they [developer Blue Castle Games] may extend it by bringing in new characters and new interactions, or bring back others from before.

"The idea would be that we'll bring digital content to bridge a link between DR2 and DR3. It's a bit like an online game in that way - a continuous story. I don't want to say episodic, but I think you'll be find there'll be scriptwriters coming in to [continue the story]."

For those not familiar with Capcom's zombie-killing franchise, Dead Rising 2 saw a special downloadable prequel, Dead Rising: Case Zero, released ahead of the launch of the full pledged game.

The title enjoyed a huge amount of success, even if it was priced at $5, and went on to sell over 500,000 copies.

A second digital release, Dead Rising: Case West, will also be launched later this year, which will see the protagonist of Dead Rising 2, Chuck Green, team up with the hero of Dead Rising 1, Frank West.

A release date has yet to be revealed for Case West, but expect it to once more shatter digital sales records, seeing as how Dead Rising 2 sold a lot of units, and because Frank West has lots of fans.
