The International Football Federation (FIFA) has taken the proper measures in the case of Italian midfielder Daniele De Rossi. After receiving a red card from the referee in Italy's match against the United States - he intentionally hit American McBride with his elbow, causing him a serious bleeding - De Rossi was judged by the international board because of the gravity of his fault.
The Italian Football Federation, as well as the player himself, have tried to convince the FIFA officials to not rule for the maximum penalty - 5 matches under
suspension - since the Roma midfielder had no such behavior in the past. More, De Rossi stated, immediately after the game, that: "I had no intention to hit McBride. That's how I usually jump for a header. You can verify that on the tapes".
Today, FIFA decided that the Italian will stay a maximum of 4 games on the bench on Italy's international matches. This way, the only possibility for the young footballer to play again for the "squadra azzura" at this year's edition of the World Cup is for his teammates to reach the final of the tournament. As for the decision made by FIFA, Antonello Valentino, the spokesman for the Italian Football Federation, stated that: "FIFA told us they gave him a four-match ban rather than a five-match ban because they appreciated the letter De Rossi wrote them apologizing for his actions".
At this time, the player released no statement to say if he is either pleased or angry with FIFA decision. Still, if we think about it, the penalty is totally justified. On one hand, Italy has the power to reach the World Cup's final, since they have a strong team. On the other hand, Genaro Gattuso has already played 2 games for Lippi's team, and did it very good. In case he will continue to play like that, De Rossi might not have the power to take his place in the team.
In the next round, Italy will meet Australia. Without major losses in terms of injuries - except for Nesta, whose situation is yet to be revealed - Italy may take advantage of Emerton's suspension from the Australian team. The match between the two teams will take place on Monday, at 17.00 CET.
