On April 26, the Saint Louis Zoo welcomed a new resident: a baby Asian elephant. Information shared with the public says that both the calf and its 42-year-old mother find themselves in perfectly good health.

By the looks of it, this day-old calf is a girl. The zoo's staff says that, despite its being quite clumsy, the baby elephant is determined to figure out how to walk straight and practices every single day.

The official website for the Saint Louis Zoo explains that, because of its young age, the baby elephant and its mother will be kept in isolation for a while.

This will give them the time to bond with each other and make it possible for the calf to make head and tail of the world around it without people annoyingly watching its every step.

Ellie, as this calf's mother is named, appears delighted to have a daughter and never lets the baby elephant out of her sight.
