Video game developer Day 1 Studios has announced that it is currently working on Reign of Thunder, an upcoming video game that will use the free-to-play model in order to power a mech-based experience.

The developers are describing the new game as being focused on the action side of mech engagements, with little interest in overall strategy and the experience will also deliver a large choice of weapons, shields and items that can be used to customize the robots.

TJ Wagner, aka PAINGOD, stated that Reign of Thunder would combine “customization and RPG elements of the early MechWarrior PC and board games with the fast paced arcade action of the MechAssault series.”

Day 1 is best known for the work it has recently done on the FEAR series, which mixes horror and first-person shooter elements, but the developer rose to prominence at the start of the original Xbox life when it launched MechAssault, in 2002, and Lone Wolf, in 2004, using a BattleTech license.
