They wanted to apply for a marriage license, but went ahead and tied the knot on the spot

Kristen Bell proposed to Dax Shepard on Twitter in June this year, right after DOMA was ruled unconstitutional, and he said he was totally game for a “gay marriage.” They tied the knot in secret and on a whim the other day, it has been confirmed.

TMZ reports that Kristen and Dax, who have been together for years and also have a daughter together, went in to apply for a marriage license.

The plan was, according to reports, to apply and then organize a very private, small ceremony that would – hopefully – manage to take place without the media finding out about it.

“The couple had a no-frills ceremony at the Beverly Hills County Clerk Office. We're told there was a photographer present, and Kristen was crying,” TMZ reports.

“According to eyewitnesses, Kristen and Dax went to the clerk office just to get their marriage license – but when a court employee offered to marry them on the spot, they agreed... and conducted the ceremony in a nearby courtroom,” adds the same media outlet.

Seeing how Kristen has always said that she would never have a typical celebrity wedding, with helicopters with paparazzi flying over the church, this really isn’t that surprising.

Neither is the fact that she finally married Dax, since she maintained all along that they would only do so when everyone else could do so freely, regardless of the orientation.

“The reason we're not rushing to get married is because I don't feel appropriate taking advantage of a right that's denied to my [gay and lesbian] friends,” Kristen said in one of her older interviews on the topics.

When she announced she was pregnant with her first child and later, after she welcomed baby girl Lincoln into the world, she offered the same answer to the question of whether a wedding was in the cards.
