David Lynch (and Cow) Launch 'Empire' Movie

No cheese, no glory, says the director

'Inland Empire', Lynch's latest creation, is a very complicated movie. As a matter of fact, it is so complicated that it involves Laura Dern, the leading lady, in three different roles in three opposed plots about filmmaking.

The enigmatic director has always been famous for his more than strange attitude both on set and off it. His work generally borders on fantasy, almost but not quite entering a magical world in which strange things happen without any explanation. It's sure that Lynch is aware that not many can understand his films and that, even more, there are a lot of people who are not even willing to try to do that.

In the light of all this, his move of buying the distribution rights for 'Inland Empire' from the producing studio, StudioCanal, and of releasing it through his own company Absurda and 518 Media makes more sense. Another reason for which Lynch decided to market his own film (which premieres next month in select theaters in Los Angeles, New York and Boston) was that he just got fed up with movie studios and their big-budgeted policies and campaigns.

'A conventional distributor is a headache and I'm finished with that. With self-distribution I'm able to shape the outcome of the film so much more', the director explained his point of view to Reuters. Instead of spending millions on huge ads and promotional products, Lynch will see to it that the movie will be distributed his way.

So, he took a real life cow and a poster with Laura Dern that also says 'Without Cheese There Would Be No "Inland Empire"' and started making stops in all big cities. The message behind the weird campaign is that he ate a lot of cheese while shooting the movie and that is what made it so great. Plus, the idea of walking around with a cow seemed cool to him and who are we to argue with that?
