As his latest and most successful movie was released on DVD the Canadian director talked to the press about his future projects that include one movie about Hollywood, one adaptation for the big screen of a Martin Amis novel and hopefully a F1 drama.
The first in line project is Maps of the Stars, due to start shooting in September. Cronenberg will work with novelist Bruce Wagner and the producers will be Serendipity and Robert Lantos. The script is written by Bruce Wagner and it's an original story about Hollywood. Although art house directors such as Cronenberg usually have a hard time finding producers and finances, Maps of the Stars will soon enter pre-production.
The second project the Canadian director was offered is Eastern Promises, a Focus Features film. Cronenberg finds himself happy with the script, at this time being rewritten by Steve Knight (who also wrote Stephen Frears' Dirty Pretty Little Things).
The third project in line is an adaptation of London fields, a novel by Martin Amis. The script has already been finished by the author and Roberta Hanley, but Cronenberg is not sure if the movie will wait long enough in order for him to finish his first two choices.
The project Cronenberg feel most attracted to is an old dream: a movie about the glorious days of the early F1 circuits, involving two antagonists, a German and an American, both working for Enzo Ferrari. Until finding the financial resources for this project the director wrote a book about "red cars" that is a collection of archive footage of vintage Ferrari race cars.
