The biggest video game releases of the current and the last few years are mostly sequels, and one of the best-known designers in the industry believes that companies need to drop this approach as long as they plan to keep making money.

David Cage, the leader of the Quantic Dream development team, has told Games Industry that, “This industry will die if it doesn’t try more to be innovative and to come up with new ideas and to talk a bit more – not necessarily serious, but deeper things at some point.”

He added, “It’s great that you can shoot at monsters, and that’s great and it will always be there and it will always be successful, but at the same time, what about giving the choice to people? Give them different options. So if they like that they find it, but if they want something deeper and interactive, they can find that too.”

Cage again expressed his view point that video games should allow players to discover deeper emotions within themselves and to allow them to guide them through a story.

The developer sees games as a better way to develop a narrative than television series or movies and wants to see more companies explore the possibilities of interaction and emotion instead of delivering yet another first-person shooter.

One recent release that David Cage liked was Journey, the PlayStation 3 exclusive created by thatgamecompany, and he wants to see more developers try to create this type of game experience.

Quantic Dream and Cage are now working on a title called Beyond: Two Souls, which will star Ellen Page as the main character and will explore questions linked to the afterlife and how people react to it.

Beyond: Two Souls is set to be launched exclusively on the PlayStation 3 in 2013.
