American Idol runner-up David Archuleta is putting music on hold for a couple of years to go on a Mormon mission. He made the announcement in concert the other day.

Video of it is above.

Archuleta, who came in second on the singing competition on the 2007-2008 season, broke the news to his fans in a speech that saw him well up and giving in to strong emotions.

Even so, he made sure he made it clear that, while he'll be gone for a few years from the scene, he's not quitting music: he's just following his heart by putting the church before anything else.

“It's not because someone told me that I'm supposed to do it, and not because I no longer want to do music, but because it's the feeling that I've felt I need to do this with my life,” he told the crowd.

Fans have been nothing but supportive of his decision.
