Depeche Mode’s current tour in support of the band’s latest album, “Sounds of the Universe,” and which includes dates throughout 2010, was cut short just days in. Frontman Dave Gahan was rushed to the hospital in Greece for a condition yet unknown, which has led to calling off the Athens concert,
Reuters reports.
According to concert organizers, Gahan fell ill and had to be taken to the emergency room, where he remains until his condition improves. While the Athens concert has already been canceled, much to the disappointment of the 20,000 fans that had purchased tickets for it, what will happen to the upcoming dates is not yet known. Speculation has it, though, that the singer will be able to join his bandmates on stage and go through with the performances scheduled for the following dates.
“British music band Depeche Mode canceled an Athens concert Tuesday after lead singer David Gahan fell ill and was taken to hospital in the Greek capital, event organizers said. ‘We regret today’s performance has to be canceled... David Gahan fell ill in his dressing room,’ a concert organizer told an audience of about 20,000 waiting for the concert to start.” Reuters says.
Despite the organizers’ decision to keep a tight lid on the sudden hospitalization, word in the industry has it that Depeche Mode fans really have nothing to worry, since Gahan is fine and will presumably be back up and running in no time, as
Rolling Stone informs. “Details are sketchy, but Gahan was reportedly ‘rushed’ to the hospital. Organizers hinted that Gahan might have suffered from ‘suspected gastroenteritis’ and could potentially perform tomorrow if his condition improved, but no official word has been issued.” the music magazine says, citing other reports in the media.
Earlier, Depeche had announced several dates for the UK as well, with music insiders saying that these are in no danger of being canceled. The shows over the upcoming days are yet uncertain, the band being expected to make an announcement to fans in a matter of hours, so keep an eye on this space for more.
