Joan Rivers will wake up from a medically induced coma later today but she might be left “a vegetable” or “in a wheelchair,” according to reports. Her only daughter, Melissa Rivers, is said to be completely devastated at the thought that she might end up alone.

Because the comedienne would not want to go through the rest of her life unable to enjoy it at the fullest, sources close to her tell the tabs. So no wonder Melissa is finding the wait until her mother wakes up completely unbearable.

Late last week, the 81-year-old comedienne went to a private clinic to get an endoscopy because she’d been having issues with her vocal chords for some time. The procedure being a routine one, she expected to be in and out of there in a matter of a couple of hours.

However, she was put under anesthesia, and at one point during the surgery, she stopped breathing. Her heart stopped beating next, and she was rushed to the Mount Sinai Hospital in New York in critical condition.

To get her vital functions to stabilize, doctors decided to put her into a medically induced coma, from which they’ve already started waking her. She is expected to be completely out of it today.

“[Melissa is] totally hysterical and is at a loss for what to do (because) they won’t know the extent of the damage until Tuesday at the earliest,” an insider reveals of how Joan’s daughter is faring at such a difficult time, as reported by Hollywood Life.

She’s distraught, and the thought that she might end up alone is making her even more so, the tipster continues. Melissa and Joan are inseparable, and Melissa would rather they remain this way for a while longer.

“As independent as she likes to think she is, Joan is the center of Melissa’s life. They even live in the same building in [New York] and work together on Fashion Police… It’s all heartbreaking,” the spy explains.

Melissa is also said to be considering taking legal action against staff at the private clinic, for allowing an 81-year-old woman to undergo the procedure as an outpatient. She believes that the medicine Joan was administered might have also made her go into respiratory arrest, and she’s determined to make those responsible for this pay, one way or another.

Meanwhile, the amazing outpour of love and support, from regular people at home and from fellow celebrities, shows that, no matter how controversial, Joan Rivers is well loved by all. Keep an eye on this space for updates on her condition.
