If you thought a $40 / €28 tablet wasn't cheap enough, brace yourself because the company behind the “world’s lowest cost tablet,” namely Datawind is planning to build one that will sell for as little as $20 / €14.

When the UbiSlate 7Ci launched for just $37.99 in the US, we thought the lowest of the lowest has been reached, but now Datawin CEO Suneet Singh Tuli says he believes the tablet’s price will slip below $20 / €14 in the next year or two, if not sooner (via eCanadaNow).

“The idea is to bridge the digital divide, it’s really that simple, the idea is to overcome the affordability barrier. We think as the Scandinavians do, that internet access is a fundamental human right.”

The company has been working side-by-side with the Indian government to supply low-cost tablets dubbed Aakash to be used in educational programs within schools, thus helping students get access to technology.

After conquering the Indian market, DataWind has turned its attention on the US and UK market where it currently tries to sell its slates directly to customers. The company continues to be able to maintain low prices, by selling the tablets directly through their website, without the help of third party retailers. So you think a $20 / €14 tablet might be any good?
