Microsoft is providing Sync Framework 2.0 to customers that need a synchronization platform which covers a wide range of scenarios and comes with support for a variety of data types, data stores, transfer protocols and network topologies. In this regard, Sync Framework 2.0 can be leveraged to bridge not only Microsoft’s data platform with its own technologies, but also with third party products. It is the case of Oracle databases and SQL Server databases.

The software giant is even offering resources designed to help streamline the configuration and execution of peer-to-peer synchronization in scenarios in which customers need to connect an Oracle database with one or multiple SQL Server Compact databases. Database Sync - Oracle and SQL Compact can be accessed for free via the online space dedicated to the Sync Framework on MSDN.

“Openness is an important aspect of the Sync Framework and one of our jobs is to knock down as many walls as possible, empowering developers to synchronize data between any two stores. We would love for you to use the Sync Framework to connect with other Microsoft products such as SQL Server and SQL Azure and oftentimes enhance the experience by lighting up on those platforms. That said, we recognize that most companies are not homogeneous in terms of the software vendors they depend upon and it is important to provide the ability to synchronize with existing investments such as Oracle or DB2. This sample demonstrates how one would go about synchronizing SQL Compact with Oracle using our new P2P providers,” explained Sean Kelley, program manager, Microsoft.

Database Sync - Oracle and SQL Compact is available for download packaged as a ZIP archive. Users should first turn to the readme.txt file in order to get insight into the installation process as well as usage instructions. According to the Redmond company, the sample is designed to demonstrate “using DbSyncProvider to build a custom Oracle provider to sync with multiple instances of a Compact client database. Povisioning an Oracle database for sync. Many of the other features demonstrated in the Sql Server to Sql CE sample, with Oracle instead of Sql Server.”
