iPhone, iPod touch to be used as a flash drive

Veiosoft has announced plans to release DataCase, an application for iPhone and iPod touch that turns the Apple handhelds into portable, wireless storage environments. The app boasts browsing, viewing and security features to be used with the stored files, and allows users to create up to 16 different volumes on their device.

"DataCase keeps your files close by turning your iPhone or iPod Touch into a hand held wireless drive," says Veiosoft. "Keep your data with you wherever you go and access it when and where you need, on any available computer (Mac, PC, Linux), no upload program or server configuration necessary."

According to the makers, the application offers drag-and-drop support for adding and removing files. It works directly with Finder and Bonjour to make saving easy. The Mac automatically detects the program's existence, so all you have to do is drag and drop like you would with any other removable media.

But what's an app like this good for if you can't view your files on the iPhone, right? Not only does DataCase put an 8GB / 16GB "memory stick" into your pocket, but it also slaps a screen onto it ? the iPhone's screen, on which you can view your documents, audio, video, and photos, as well as Powerpoint documents, Word documents, PDFs, and Excel spreadsheets. You can even save files to your iPhone or iPod Touch using the standard FTP.

DataCase Network Support:

- Support for Apple File Protocol (AFP) file transfers on Mac OS X 10.3 and later - Supports Bonjour zero-configuration networking for AFP connections - Supports FTP - Supports HTTP for upload and download

At launch, DataCase will offer support for English, Spanish, French, German, Chinese, and Japanese, with Veiosoft promising that more languages are to be included afterwards. Nevertheless, your files can be named in any language you want.

As if DataCase wasn't cool enough, you can create multiple volumes to separate your data any way you like. Each volume is independent and allows you to define how it can be accessed (read, write, and browse permissions, or even make it invisible). Volumes can also be set up to alert you before allowing a connection over the network.

DataCase will become available on July 28 for $6.99 on the App Store. To use the app, iPhone and iPod touch users will be required to have OS version 2.0 installed on their devices, a computer (Mac, Windows, Linux, Other) with a web browser, Mac OS 10.3+ for AFP integration, and a wireless network connection.
