THQ has revealed the first official details concerning Darksiders II, the sequel to the surprisingly popular Darksiders title that appeared last year from Vigil Games.

Darksiders told the story of War, one of the four horsemen of the apocalypse, who is trying to make up for his mistake, which sent the forces of Heaven and Hell on Earth, destroying it almost completely.

The game became quite popular, prompting its publisher, THQ, to announced that a sequel is in development.

No other details were given since then, but the company, alongside Vigil Games, the developer of the series, have now presented the first batches of information about the new game, including the fact that it's going to feature a new protagonist.

Darksiders II swaps out War for another horseman of the apocalypse, Death, his brother, who is going to embark on a journey through "the realms of light and dark," with the action taking place at the same time as the first Darksiders.

"We have taken the best parts of Darksiders and improved on them with a host of new mechanics and features," THQ Core Games boss Danny Bilson said in a statement. "You will see great things from this epic game."

Among the new features of Darksiders II, players can expect a "dramatically" larger world, a complete weapon and armor upgrade system, bigger dungeons as well as plenty of new enemies, bosses and adversaries for Death to overcome while trying to redeem War.

As you can see above, Game Informer magazine is running a cover story on Darksiders II, so expect more details to slowly trickle out over the next few weeks.

Darksiders II is being developed for the PC, PlayStation 3 and Xbox 360, and is scheduled to arrive next year, with THQ declining to set a concrete launch date for the new game.
