Developer Vigil Games shares its desires for a third game

Vigil Games, the studio behind the Darksiders franchise, which is set to launch its second game next month, has revealed that a Darksiders 3 is a possibility, as it depends only on the sales of the upcoming game.

Darksiders 1 delivered a pretty intense hack and slash experience and its sequel, despite the financial problems of publisher THQ and the layoffs at developer Vigil, is looking set to be even more impressive.

According to the game’s lead designer, Haydn Dalton, the studio would like to do a third game but it ultimately depends on the sales of the upcoming sequel.

"The only people who can really shape if we do [another] Darksiders or not is basically the public," Dalton told VideoGamer. "If we come out and it does really well then I think it's really compelling; we can't not come out and maybe do something else in the Darksiders franchise."

One of the things that Dalton wants in a potential Darksiders 3 is a smaller, but more detailed world, as he believes that players will enjoy quality over quantity.

"If Jason's [Rubin, President, THQ] sat there and we go and sell 4 or 5 million units, I'm pretty sure he won't say, 'Let's go and do something different now'. Maybe what he might do is turn around and say, 'We'll do another Darksiders game, but we'll try and reduce the scope so that we can make it even higher polished'. Because our scope is huge. Maybe he says, 'Bring the scope down a little bit, we'll still do another game but it's a lot more focused'. That's not such a bad thing to do either."

Dalton is proud of the world created for Darksiders II, but he believes that a smaller, yet more detailed experience can also entertain players, even if they are not able to explore it as much as possible.

"We've done a huge world in this one," the designer added, "but there might be even more polish, there might be a lot more animated things in the environment and a lot more detail or destruction or whatever it might be in the world because of a reduce in size. Rather than doing sheer square-footage, it's more like what can you do in less room by focusing on it, and depth [and] interaction within a smaller environment."

Darksiders II is out on August 14, in North America, and August 17, in Europe, for the PC, PS3, and Xbox 360 platforms.
