Namco Badai's Dark Souls 2 was released two weeks ago, with the total player death counter hitting 4.3 million in just two days. Surprisingly, more than 5 percent of all deaths were attributed to that pesky force that wants to end us all, gravity.

The action role-playing game was released a week ago in Japan too, and so far the title has sold very well, going through 90.19 percent of its shipped copies, according to Japanese sales tracker Media Create.

The company's weekly sales report shared that Dark Souls 2 sold 255,197 copies of its PlayStation 3 version and 5,950 of the Xbox 360 version, for an aggregate of 261,147, by far being the best selling video game item in the period.

The Japanese sales tracker pointed out that the game was nearly sold out at launch in Japan, with a few stores experiencing shortages of the title, which places Dark Souls 2's performance very near its predecessor.

When Dark Souls was launched in 2011, it too sold similar numbers, and around 90 percent of the total shipped copies were purchased in the Japanese islands.

Furthermore, Media Create added that some retailers indicated that fans of the original Dark Souls comprised the majority of Dark Souls 2 buyers, which means that it was so captivating that it managed to retain its fan base.
