There is a new solid-state drive line ready to serve in embedded computing, server, notebook, and tablet devices used in military, public safety, utility, homeland security and mining applications.

Consumer solid-state drives are pretty straightforward: NAND Flash-based storage devices with high transfer speeds.

Only when they are granted enhanced physical toughness and data protection, do they become suited for special applications though.

On this occasion, Dane-Elec has targeted high-threat and unpredictable environments. Its new line of SSDs is called mySSD O-Series.

Three capacities are available: 64 GB, 120 GB and 240 GB. All of them use AES-128 encryption in CTR mode and AES-256 in XTS mode.

The form factor is 1.8 inches, hence the suitability for slates and other, compact machinery.

The transfer speed does not achieve any records, being limited by the SATA II interface (3.0 Gbps), but 285 MB/s when reading and 275 MB/s when writing is still more than decent. The SMI - SM2244 controller chip is behind those numbers, as well as 50k IOPS random performance.

As for data integrity, advanced wear leveling algorithms are joined by SMART enterprise-level data monitoring.

"The mySSD O-Series is designed for high-threat and unpredictable environments in which durability and reliability is absolutely essential," remarked Eric Tafolla, OEM sales engineer at Dane-Elec.

"Flash-based SSD drives are steadily replacing outdated and less reliable spinning disk drives; however, one product does not fit every customer's unique requirements. That is why we offer customized solutions, where our products are built to meet specific customer needs, in addition to our standard O-Series models."

Windows 7, Windows Vista and Windows XP, as well as Mac OS X and Linus operating systems are compatible with Dane-Elec's storage products. The warranty is of five years but, even though shipments should already be possible, no prices were given in the press release.
