“Fifty Shades” star makes SNL debut to mixed reactions

Dakota Johnson could stop promoting “Fifty Shades of Grey” altogether and the movie would still continue to make a killing at the box office. However, she hosted Saturday Night Live over the weekend, as part of the ongoing promo tour for the critically derided pic.

The results weren’t what she probably expected. Though she kicked off the night on a so-and-so note, with the opening monolog, which even got a cameo from her famous parents Don Johnson and Melanie Griffith, she hit a bum note with the ISIS spoof and then with the Press Junket skit, in which a 4th grader interviewed her about the movie.

It’s the ISIS spoof that got the most attention online, with countless voices criticizing both the SNL writers and Dakota for thinking it was ever a good idea, especially in the wake of an increase in the case of women joining the Islamic state and kidnappings by its members.

The spoof was based on the very emotional Toyota Camry’s “My Bold Dad” Super Bowl ad, in which a father takes his daughter to the airport to join the military. In the SNL skit, the father (Taran Killam) and his daughter (Johnson) are driving to the airport, seemingly with her about to start college.

Instead, she jumps in an ISIS truck and drives off into the sunset, with the Islamic State fighters shooting off their impressive weapons and screaming “Death to America.”

You can see that skit and the other two mentioned above in the videos embedded below. In case you’re outside of the US, you won’t be able to see the NBC videos, so the YouTube one with the ISIS spoof will have to do. Enjoy!
