When he came up with the Oh, Lola! fragrance, Marc Jacobs aimed high: he wanted to bring back something of the forbidden charm of Lolita, as author Vladimir Nabokov created her. He’s finally found someone to bring her to life in 17-year-old actress Dakota Fanning.

The first ad for the new perfume has been released and, while it shows nothing inappropriate, it’s already causing quite a fuss online, with people debating whether it’s “wrong” or not.

The ad shows the actress against a pink backdrop, dressed in a pink polka dot dress, leaning back and staring straight into the camera.

On her lap, she’s holding an oversized bottle of the Oh, Lola! perfume, which is unmistakable because of the flower-shaped top.

Speaking with WWD, Marc Jacobs, who is actually a repeat offender with controversial ads, says he knew from the start that Dakota would be his perfect, dream Lolita.

So he didn’t hesitate to approach the actress with an offer to front the campaign.

“I’ve been a big fan of Dakota since the first time I saw her in a movie. When we were speaking about who to use in the Oh, Lola fragrance ads – I had recently seen ‘The Runaways’,” Jacobs says for the fashion publication.

“Dakota was in it, and I knew she could be this contemporary Lolita, seductive yet sweet,” the designer adds.

The feeling of admiration was mutual, luckily for him: in the same interview, Dakota admits she’s been using Marc Jacobs perfumes for a while, so she immediately jumped at the opportunity to be the face of the latest.

“Every time one of Marc’s fragrances comes out I run to the store to buy it,” she says for WWD, though chances of her ever needing to buy her own Marc Jacobs perfume again are slim to none, now that she’s endorsing one.

“The moment I was asked to be a part of the Oh, Lola campaign, I was so humbled and said ‘yes’ immediately,” adds the actress.
