There's a reason why all of your favorite TV shows take a break during the summer, no one watches TV during this time. This seems to be true for online video as well, which is also seeing a slump in viewer numbers in the first month of summer.

According to Nielsen data, while viewership is slightly down, there are still plenty of people watching online video in the US.

YouTube still dominates, of course, but the excitement is further down the list. Dailymotion, the French online video powerhouse, for example, has seen one of its biggest months yet in the US with a 21 percent growth in the number of videos watched.

"The number of online video viewers in the U.S. decreased slightly in June to 142.6 million unique viewers. Streaming activity was also down 4 percent from last month, with 14.5 billion video streams in June," Nielsen wrote.

"Even though fewer people in the U.S. viewed video online during the month, users spent more total time watching – four and a half hours on average during the month, an increase of 4 percent from May," it added.

108 million people watched a video on YouTube in the US last month. That's a three percent drop from the previous month, but other sites saw much worse numbers.

Facebook, for instance, got a 13.3 percent drop in viewer numbers, reaching 25.3 million Americans. All other top properties saw a decline, College Humor though got a 23.2 increase in the number of people watching videos on its sites, 14.5 million in total.

"Dailymotion showed the strongest month-over-month growth among the top 10 destinations for video streaming, up 21 percent to 183 million videos. VEVO also saw an increase in video streams from May (+3%), while top online video destination YouTube held steady with 8.9 billion videos streamed during June," Nielsen added.
