Despite the big amount of new titles that is being released each week, the Japanese market seems fixated on getting Pokemon video games in the top spot in software charts and on making the Nintendo DSi handheld on which they are played the best sold piece of gaming hardware.
The DSi, which is set to receive a new version,
the LL, that has a bigger and sharper screen, has sold a little over 42,000 units, lower than during the previous week. Its nearest rival is the PlayStation Portable from Sony, which moved 32,865 units in the same time frame.
When it comes to home consoles, the
PlayStation 3 has pulled well ahead of the Nintendo Wii, with close to 26,000 units sold in contrast with 25,917. The Microsoft-made Xbox 360 has managed to sell less than the DS Lite in the lower end of the chart, while, on its nine-years-of-life anniversary, the PlayStation 2 succeeded in selling 1,951 units.
Pokemon Heart and Pokemon Silver are still dominating video-game sales, even if, with 118,000 copies moved in one week, they are losing some steam. Wii Fit is sitting prettily in the second spot and seems poised for a long run in the top five, while the third place goes to the Tomodachi Collection on the DS, with 52,000 copies sold. The fourth place goes to Inazuma Eleven 2: Kyoui no Shinryakusha from Level 5, followed by a new entry, Rune Factory 3 from Marvelous.
The real surprise is that Forza Motorsport 3 from Microsoft has broken into the top 10 with 32,000 units sold, which is better than Halo 3: ODST did in its first week in Japan. The gamers in the Land of the Rising Sun probably got tired of waiting for Sony to get Gran Turismo 5 on the PlayStation 3 and have moved to see what Microsoft has to offer with Forza 3.
