Mobile phone carrier Verizon Wireless has finally opened the purchase process for the highly anticipated Motorola DROID handset, its first device powered by Google's Android operating system, and for the HTC DROID ERIS, the second Android phone it offers to its users. Rumored for quite a few months now, the two devices can be purchased from Verizon's online store, as well as from the company's retail locations around the United States.

The Motorola DROID is also the first to sport the fresh Android 2.0 Eclair platform from Google. The handset is expected to prove the nicest and most powerful Android-based phone launched on the market during the ongoing year and it will certainly be able to make a lot of Verizon customers happy.

The specs list of the Motorola DROID shouldn't be a mystery to anyone, but a quick look at some of the most important ones deserves to be taken. Thus, we should mention a 3.7-inch touchscreen display (480 x 854 WVGA resolution, support for 16 million colors), a 5-megapixel photo snapper with great features, a sliding QWERTY keyboard, support for Visual Voice Mail, Google Maps with Navigation beta, social networking, microSD memory card slot with a 16GB card included, GPS, Wi-Fi, HTML Web Browser, 3.5mm headset jack and a battery that delivers up to 385 minutes of usage time.

The second device, HTC DROID ERIS, also sports a great deal of appealing features, including a 3.2-inch touchscreen display, a 5-megapixel camera, 3.5mm headset jack, an 8GB microSD card included (supports 16GB of additional storage space), speakerphone, GPS, Wi-Fi, Bluetooth Stereo Support, support for email, IM, SMS and MMS, support for a great deal of services, Android 1.5, and a battery that can offer up to 214 minutes of usage time.

Both the Motorola DROID and the HTC DROID ERIS are now listed on Verizon's website here and here, respectively. The Android 2.0-based DROID is priced at $199.99 on a two-year contract and with a $100 mail-in rebate, while the DROID ERIS costs $99.99 with the same requirements. Head over to Verizon to grab one of the two handsets, or access Best Buy or other retailers to benefit from their offerings on the new devices.
