Today, wireless services provider Verizon Wireless made available for purchase on its network two new, highly appealing smartphones running under Google's Android operating system, namely the Motorola DROID X2 and the Sony Ericsson Xperia PLAY. The Motorola DROID X2 was designed to bring the power of dual-core application processors to Verizon's family of DROID devices. Today, it can be purchased from Verizon's website here for $199.99 upon the signing of a two-year contract agreement.

It sports a similar form factor as its predecessor, the Motorola DROID X, such as a large 4.3-inch touchscreen display, which delivers a qHD 960x540 pixels resolution.

The new device is powered by Google's Android 2.2 Froyo operating system, offers support for Flash Player, as well as the full suite of Google applications and services, and fast Internet browsing on Verizon's 3G network.

“DROID X2 is fueled by a dual-core 1GHz processor. Translation: faster load times, faster gaming, and a much faster you. Bring on the rich media, the animations, and the Flash videos, because you are now a no–holds–barred browsing beast,” the wireless carrier notes on its website.

“Capture the images that are rightfully yours with rapid–fire photography, continuous auto–focus, dual LED flash, and the eagle–eye clarity of an 8MP camera. Flip the switch to record video in 720p HD even if you’re losing light, because darkness doesn’t stop Droid, and it no longer stops you.”

The specifications list of the new mobile phone also includes Wi–Fi 802.11 b/g/n, Bluetooth, GPS receiver, a 1540 mAH Li–Ion battery, DLNA Wireless sharing, 3G Mobile Hotspot, or a 8GB pre–installed microSD card to complement the 8GB Internal memory.

As for the Sony Ericsson Xperia PLAY, it arrives on shelves as the first PlayStation-certified handset in the world, running under the Android 2.3 Gingerbread OS, and sporting a sliding gamepad hidden beneath its large 4-inch toushscreen display.

The mobile phone comes with a 5-megapixel photo snapper in the back, support for eCompass and other sensors, 1GHz CPU (Qualcomm MSM 8655) and Adreno 205 graphics processor, and an 8GB MicroSD card pre-installed.

The Xperia PLAY also comes with specific pre-loaded games, namely Bruce Lee Dragon Warrior, The Sims 3, Star Battalion, Asphalt 6: Adrenaline, Madden NFL 11 from EA, and Crash Bandicoot, and with support for more of them, available for download via the Android Market.

The Xperia PLAY is available for purchase through Verizon for $199.99 on a two-year contract, users interested in it should head to the carrier's website here.
