Verizon is readying a major software update for two of its top-tier Android smartphones, the DROID RAZR and DROID RAZR MAXX.

Although the carrier has already published the official change log, the update has yet to be released on its airwaves. Software update 6.12.173.XT912.Verizon.en.US will be pushed OTA (over the air) within the next few days.

Keep in mind that both smartphones will be receiving the same software update, which means that DROID RAZR and DROID RAZR MAXX will get the same bug fixes and new features.

This update was leaked a few weeks ago, but there was no confirmation whether the carrier planned to roll out the update at that time or not. Today, Verizon confirmed that the final version of the update would be available for download soon.

Lots of improvements have been added, along with several new features and apps. Visual Mail received the most upgrades, while the V CAST app will come pre-loaded on the smartphones.

It is also worth mentioning that the battery life when using Phone Book Access Profile Bluetooth headsets has been considerably improved, along with the device’s stability when browsing between home screen panels.

The rest of the change log is detailed below:

Applications:

- Mobile Hotspot will now successfully allow other devices to connect to all Internet websites;

- Improvements in the Mobile Hotspot security;

- VZ Navigator has been updated with the latest 3D map improvements;

- Visual Voice Mail Updates: Visual Voice Mail messages can be marked as read; Visual Voice Mail message playback resumes when audio is switched to speaker; Visual Voice Mail will successfully subscribe or unsubscribe while connected with Wi-Fi; Successfully press back key after playback in Visual Voice Mail without error;

- MotoCast installation steps have been improved for easier use.

Data Connectivity:

- Improved stability of data connectivity after Airplane Mode is disabled;

- Improved data throughput performance in low-signal 4G environments.

Device Operation:

- Successfully save multimedia ringtones;

- Favorite Contacts widget has been updated;

- Improved device stability when moving between home screen panels;

- Email icon has been updated for improved visibility;

 When performing an Over the Air (OTA) update, the display will correctly show the remaining download time;

- CMAS (Commercial Mobile Alert Service) feature has been added.

It shouldn’t take Verizon more than a few days to start rolling out this consistent software update for the DROID RAZR and DROID RAZR MAXX, so stay tune for more updates on the matter.

They need to address the fact you can't change the volume of a call if you are listening to your headset via earpiece attached to the phone (not speaker phone) The only way you can change the volume is to move the phone away from your ear (when the sensor light goes on.) As far as visual Voice mail you cannot change the volume at all if you u listen to your messages in your ear (on speaker phone you can change the volume)
